Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012)
Dorothea Tanning
Over a seven-decade career, Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) redrew and extended the boundaries of surrealist art. She developed her extensive body of work between the USA and France, producing paintings, drawings, costume and set designs for ballets, soft sculptures, novels and poems. Her output draws upon a deep and personal universe invented to give meaning to modern life, and her pieces create an uncanny space that is at once seductive and pernicious. Alyce Mahon is Reader in Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Cambridge, Ann Coxon is Curator of Displays and International Art at Tate Modern, London, and Idoia Murga Castro is Tenured Researcher at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Madrid. |
